BBC Indonesia is part of the BBC World Service, an international multi-media news organisation which provides news and current affairs output to a global audience. From its offices in London and Jakarta, BBC Indonesia serves its audience in Indonesian language on radio, on the internet and on mobile phone.

We are looking for a Bureau Editor to lead a team of experienced journalists in the bureau’s multi-media news operations. The successful candidate will be a key player in devising strategy for BBC Indonesia; supervising newsgathering team in Jakarta and working closely with the London team to ensure the excellent editorial standards of the BBC output.

Candidates must have experience in leading or managing a team of journalists. Having excellent Indonesian and English language skills, written and spoken, is essential. You must have first-class editorial judgment and thorough knowledge of Indonesia, the world and regional affairs, as well as being confident in working in multi-media environment.

JOB DESCRIPTION
Job title : Jakarta Bureau Editor, BBC Indonesian Service
Reports to : Indonesian Service Head
Status : Fixed-term, 3 years
Pay Scale : local terms
Job Purpose:

To be the first point of editorial reference in the Indonesian Service’s Jakarta Bureau. To assist the Service Head in the day to day management of the Bureau, being responsible for ensuring the highest editorial and production standards and working with London-based Desk Editors for planning and promoting programme output in all platforms. To carry out a range of management and supervisory duties as delegated by the Service Head and to help with the development of changing working practices to meet the needs of a fast changing broadcasting and online market.

Main Duties

1. To be a point of editorial reference, supervising production work to ensure output (in all platforms) conforms to BBC editorial guidelines and is lively, interesting and oriented towards target area. This includes giving proper editorial consideration to output material and taking decisions on its suitability and quality.

2. To be responsible for managing the rota for Jakarta editorial team. This includes arranging rota emergency changes to ensure adequate staffing levels and assisting with the management of leave.

3. To listen to all of the Service’s programmes and be responsible for monitoring editorial standards and output quality in all platforms, giving constructive feedback and recommending improvements in staff performance where necessary.

4. To be responsible for forward planning of features, news agenda and special projects involving the Jakarta editorial team. Produce a short-term planning note weekly and a long-term, more strategic planning note as required.

5. To be responsible for the finances of the Jakarta Office, operating within the allocated budget, supervising the operation of financial controls and procedures and acting as a signatory for the bank accounts.
